MOGADISHU (Halbeeg News) – The Kenyan government has condemned the deadly attack on a military base in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu, which killed over six people and wounded more than 20 others.
The heinous attack took place at the General Gordon military facility in the Somali capital, Mogadishu.
Among those killed include Somali, United Arab Emirates, and Bahrain military officers.
The UAE government said four of its military officials were in Mogadishu while Bahrain also confirmed the death of one of its military officials after a soldier opened fire at the military base.
The attack was claimed by al-Shabaab, an al-Qaeda-affiliated armed group which has been fighting Somali forces and continental troops for more than 15 years.
In a statement, Kenya Defence Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale said he joined the government of Somalia and that of the UAE in condemning the attack which he termed as cowardly.
“My prayers and sincere sympathies go out to the families and friends of all those who died in the unfortunate attack as well as to those who were injured or otherwise affected; I wish them a speedy recovery,” Duale said.
Duale commended the efforts of the gallant soldiers who lost their lives in the attack.
“On behalf of the Ministry of Defence, Kenya, I wish to express our solidarity with the two countries during this difficult time,” he said.
He expressed confidence in the resilience of the people of UAE to rise from the attack and continue in the efforts to degrade terrorism.
“We stand by the African Transition Mission in Somalia in our resolve to degrade and neutralise the al Shabaab terrorists,” he said.
